Opening of new on and off ramps at the Marlboro Interchange on the N3

Marlboro_-_19_april_2011

The new north- and south-bound onramps at the Marlboro Interchange on
the N3 will be opened to traffic on Tuesday, 19 April 2011.

The improvements and upgrading of the Marlboro Interchange, part of
SANRAL’s Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) is nearing
completion. Additional lanes have been provided on Marlboro drive, as
well as two new loop ramps which will ensure free flow access onto the
N3 highway. These ramps will primarily serve road users travelling
from Sandton towards Germiston (N3 South) and road users travelling
from Linbro Park towards Pretoria (N3 North).

A new free flow directional loop on-ramp giving access onto the N3
south has been built on the northern side of the bridge to provide
access to the freeway for traffic heading south towards Germiston and
the OR Tambo International Airport. Road users travelling east on
Marlboro Drive to access the N3 south must stay in the left hand lane.
After crossing the bridge over the N3 highway they must turn left onto
the new loop on-ramp as indicated in the attached diagram.

The other new free flow directional loop on-ramp giving access onto
the N3 north has been built on the southern side of the bridge to
provide access to the freeway for traffic heading north towards
Pretoria and the Buccleuch Interchange. Road users travelling west on
Marlboro Drive to access the N3 north must stay in the left hand lane.
After crossing the bridge over the N3 freeway they must turn left onto
the new loop on-ramp as indicated in the attached diagram.

The above changes to the traffic flow will be clearly defined by the
road signs and road markings. Road users are requested to reduce speed
and observe the roads signs, while familiarising themselves with the
new loop ramps.

DEMOLITION OF THE LE ROUX ROAD BRIDGE OVER THE N1 THIS WEEKEND

The N1 Highway will be reduced to two lanes per direction in the
vicinity of the Le Roux Road Bridge (between the Allandale and New
Road Interchanges) from 21:00 on Friday, January 21 until Sunday,
January 23 to allow for the demolition of the old Le Roux Road Bridge.

As part of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL’s)
Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), the old Le Roux Road
Bridge, spanning the N1 freeway between the Allandale and New Road
Interchanges will be demolished. The bridge span across the freeway is
too short to provide for the additional lanes that will be added on
the freeway and therefore need to be demolished. A new bridge that has
sufficient length to span across the additional lanes has been
constructed and opened to traffic.

The eastern span of the old bridge will be demolished first.
Preparatory works will start on Friday the 21st of January 2011 at
21h00. Traffic on the N1 southbound carriageway will be diverted onto
the northbound carriageway, which will carry both directions of
traffic – see Figure 1. It is expected that demolition of the eastern
span will be completed early on Saturday morning.

As soon as all debris is removed from the carriageway preparatory work
will start on the demolition of the western span. Traffic on the N1
northbound carriageway will be diverted onto the southbound
carriageway, which will carry both directions of traffic – see Figure
2. It is expected that demolition of the western span will start at
21h00 on Saturday, January 22 to be completed on Sunday, January 23.

A minimum of two lanes per direction on the N1 will be open to traffic
during the operation. Road users are requested to exercise caution,
reduce speeds and observe the posted speed limits.

Traffic on the new Le Roux bridge should not be affected by the demolition.

The demolition has been scheduled on a weekend to avoid an impact on
the traffic flow of the N1 during a working week.

SANRAL wishes to thank road users for their co-operation and
apologises in advance for any inconvenience that may be caused.

TELKOM UNVEILS HIGHER SPEED ADSL

INTERNET users are in for big benefits from Telkom’s latest network upgrade.

Within weeks of rolling out substantially expanded data packages, the company today announced that TelkomInternet will increase the speed of its Fastest DSL
offering to “up to10 Mbps”,
effective 15 August 2010.

Telkom

is enhancing its ADSL network to support ADSL speeds of up to 10Mbps in all areas which have suitable technology at exchanges to support the upgrade.

The10 Mbps ADSL speed is an innovative enhancement to the existing Fastest DSL product, which now allows users to potentially burst at 10 Mbps.

All upgrades therefore remain subject to localised line conditions and the type of equipment available at the nearest exchange.

The upgrade is focussed on 4Mbps users who currently sync at full profile speed. This means that 10 Mbps will initially have a limited footprint, but this footprint will increase as Telkom expands its Metro Ethernet and ADSL2+ presence.

Customers can use an online availability check tool to establish the status of upgrades in their area. The availability checker can be found on the following web pages:
